Los Angeles Times Book Prize winner Alex Segura (Secret Identity) pens an all-new Marvel Crime thriller novel for adult readers with Enemy of My Enemy: A Daredevil Marvel Crime Novel. This is the latest book in the Marvel Crime series that began with Lisa Jewell’s Breaking the Dark, and brings fans into a grittier, street-level side of the Marvel Universe. Marvel Crime novels build on one another but do not require in-depth familiarity with Marvel or the other books in the series.
In a letter to comic retailers, Segura describes his fondest memories involving Daredevil in a comic shop, his inspiration and goals in writing this novel, and what he hopes fans and retailers can get out of this new entry point into the street-level Marvel universe.
Dear Comic Shop Retailers,
Some of my fondest memories involving Daredevil happened in a comic shop. Discovering a copy of a tattered Miller/Janson issue. Picking up the series as part of my monthly haul. Or just talking shop with my fellow regulars. I know the power a comic shop holds, and how important retailers are to not only comics, but entertainment.
Enemy of My Enemy: A Daredevil Marvel Crime Novel is a love letter to the character—a comics on-ramp to people who might know Daredevil, Kingpin, and Punisher from the TV series, and also a tip of the hat to others, like us, who’ve been reading ole Hornhead’s adventures since before they could remember. It does what, I hope, all great DD stories do—challenge Matt Murdock’s core beliefs and dual life, while forcing him to make tough choices in his personal and vigilante life. If your worst enemies were mutually destroying each other, would you intervene if you felt something was wrong? Not many folks would—but Matt Murdock isn’t just anybody.
Loaded with cameos, lore, and Easter Eggs, Enemy of My Enemy is also my idea of a “prime” DD story—featuring all the major elements many would consider essential to the character. My hope is you can hand it to fans new and old, who’ve ever come back or never left the streets of Hell’s Kitchen.
Thanks, as always, for your support.
-Alex Segura
