Rita Hsiao was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, NY, USA, the American-born daughter of Chinese parents. At UC San Diego, she majored in artificial intelligence, but decided to look for a job in writing. After starting in television with work on shows like The Wonder Years and Ellen, she transitioned to film, and has since written kid's movies like Mulan (and its direct-to-video sequel), Toy Story 2, and My Little Pony: The Movie.
