This companion book from the creators of You, Me, We: A Celebration of Peace and Community explores another subject near and dear to Mahatma Gandhi's heart: service.

What does it mean to be of service? What do we have to give? Can receiving be an act of service? Being a neighbor? A family or community member? A global citizen? Service takes many forms, some as simple as holding a door open, sharing a sandwich, or gathering with friends to beautify a public park. Coauthored by Mahatma Gandhi’s late grandson and drawing on both his grandfather’s work and the philosophies of educator Maria Montessori, this timely story asks gently guiding questions to encourage even the youngest citizens to be mindful of what they have—and all they have to give. Rich in emotional wisdom, filled with ideas and prompts, and featuring vibrant and richly inclusive illustrations by Colombian artist Andrés Landazábal, this dynamic portrait of children sharing their time, energy, and talents will inspire readers to explore how much it means—and how it feels—to serve the greater good.
Arun Gandhi (1934–2023) wrote You, Me, We: A Celebration of Peace and Community, coauthored with Bethany Hegedus and illustrated by Andrés Landazábal, as well as the picture books Grandfather Gandhi and Be the Change, both illustrated by Evan Turk, and the adult memoir Legacy of Love: My Education in the Path of Nonviolence, all of which were inspired by his grandfather Mahatma Gandhi.

Bethany Hegedus is the coauthor, with Arun Gandhi, of You, Me, We: A Celebration of Peace and Community, and the picture books Grandfather Gandhi and Be the Change, both illustrated by Evan Turk, as well as the author of the picture books Alabama Spitfire: The Story of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird, illustrated by Erin McGuire; Hard Work, but It’s Worth It: The Life of Jimmy Carter, illustrated by Kyung Eun Han; Rise! From Caged Bird to Poet of the People, Maya Angelou, illustrated by Tonya Engel; and Huddle Up! Cuddle Up!, illustrated by Mike Deas. Bethany Hegedus is the founder and creative director of the Writing Barn, a writing retreat and workshop center in Austin, Texas, where she lives and writes.

Andrés Landazábal is an art director and the illustrator of numerous picture books, including You, Me, We: A Celebration of Peace and Community by Arun Gandhi and Bethany Hegedus, Once Upon Another Time by Charles Ghigna and Matt Forrest Esenwine, The Fabulous World That God Made by Joyce K. Ellis, and Oliver’s Lollipop by Allison Wortche. Andrés Landazábal lives in Armenia, Colombia.
