Cousins Kim and Tyler Malek combined their love of ice cream and community engagement to create Salt & Straw, a beloved US-based ice cream shop that boasts unique flavor combinations featuring local artisans and ingredients. Beginning as a food cart in Portland, Oregon, in 2011, Salt & Straw now has 40 locations from coast to coast.

Kim and Tyler prioritize delicious flavor combinations alongside local community engagement and support of nonprofit organizations. Over the years, they’ve supported equal rights through Basic Rights Oregon and The Trevor Project, food waste and insecurity with Urban Gleaners and Share Our Strength, child cancer research through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, and the preservation of our protected landscape through the National Park Foundation.

Using ice cream as a blank slate for storytelling, Kim and Tyler fearlessly explore ingredients, discover emerging artisans, and share inspiring, unifying experiences through their business.
