In case you missed it last week, Marvel Studios finally revealed what the asterisk in the Thunderbolts* film title means: Meet The New Avengers.
At the Hollywood premiere, the cast filmed a secret video revealing the film’s true title—a secret that has been well kept for months. With this additional marketing boom last week, Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* managed to hold onto its #1 box office spot this past weekend. Adding to its impressive $128.5 million domestic, and $272.2 million global, box office gross. With strong reviews and fan reactions all over the internet, Thunderbolts*—or The New Avengers—should continue to drive conversation for many weeks to come.
The film follows an unconventional team of antiheroes — Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?
The secret of the asterisk in the title found its way into the comics as well, as Marvel announced an upcoming series, called New Thunderbolts* in the April catalog. Following suit with the film, Marvel has updated the title and description of this series to New Avengers.
Carnage. The Hulk. Namor. Clea. Wolverine. Five of the most dangerous loners and antiheroes in the Marvel Universe. Nothing could make them work together…but Bucky Barnes and the Black Widow are going to give it a shot. Demented duplicates of the Illuminati are threatening the world, and if they figure out how to work together, they’ll be as unstoppable as the originals. Bucky and Natasha need allies who will do anything to take the duplicates out – but wrangling a team of killers and monsters presents its own dangers. Welcome to the New Avengers – hope you survive the experience!
