The best-selling video game of all time is coming to the big screen next year!
Earlier this week Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie. The film will be directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Ninety-Five Senses, Nacho Libre) and stars Jack Black, Jason Mamoa, Emma Myers, Oscar-nominee Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Read the official synopsis below:
“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
Minecraft began in 2009 with the first public test build of the video game before its official box release in 2011. Since then, Minecraft has become the best-selling video game of all time and has spun off into a number of different games, books, graphic novels, tabletop games, and merchandise. The franchise has sustained its juggernaut status for over ten years now, with views for Minecraft related videos on YouTube reaching over one trillion. The teaser for A Minecraft Movie is currently the #1 trending video on the site. The film promises laughs, adventure, and appearances by iconic Minecraft characters and creatures like the Ender Dragon, Creeper, and Jack Black as Steve, the default player character from the game.
A Minecraft Movie will be released only in theaters and IMAX on April 4, 2025. Check out some other great Minecraft tie-in titles below!
