A trailer for the latest Hellboy film dropped online last night. The upcoming 2024 film is the third version of the Mike Mignola character brought to film after Guillermo del Toro’s duology in 2004 and 2008, and Neil Marshall’s 2019 film. While this new adaptation largely flew under the radar until now, it shouldn’t be overlooked by fans of Hellboy and horror films. It could prove to be the sleeper comic book adaptation of 2024.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man is an adaptation the Mike Mignola story of the same name. Mignola, who is heavily involved in this version, spoke highly of it in an interview with Variety in 2023.
“For years, we’ve been saying, if you’re going to make a Hellboy movie, make it small. And the perfect story to do that with is my personal favorite, ‘The Crooked Man.’ I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. It’s beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben, and it’s a solid story that doesn’t involve a million different characters. Everybody actually agreed from the very beginning, ‘Yes, we want to do that one.’ Budget-wise, it’s good because it’s a lower budget kind of a story. It’s not the Hellboy origin. It’s not Hellboy saving the world. It’s not huge. It’s a subtle, dark, little folk horror story.”
Hellboy will be portrayed this time by Jack Kesy, who previously played Black Tom Cassidy in Deadpool 2. The film is being directed by Brian Taylor, known for the Crank franchise. We recommend stocking up on Hellboy: The Crooked Man ahead of the film’s release. It was collected along with its sequel series, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Return of Effie Kolb, in anticipation of the film. You can check out that collection and other Hellboy titles below!
