It feels like the wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will never end! The Across the Spider-Verse cliff hanger ending with Miles (SPOILER ALERT) being trapped in an alternate universe and Spider-Gwen rallying troops to rescue him has all of us anxiously anticipating the big screen conclusion. Fortunately, this week we’ve gotten a bite-sized story set within the films’ continuity to tide us over. An official short film, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story illustrates the mental health struggles Miles is dealing with juggling the daily stresses of being a teenager as well as Brooklyn’s spectacular, amazing, friendly neighborhood (dare we say, ultimate?) Spider-Man. Not only does the short tackle these universal troubles in a touching (and at points terrifying) manner, it’s all for a good cause, too!

The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story clocks in at approximately five minutes, seems to take place before the ending of Across the Spider-Verse and is a result of a terrific collaboration between Sony Pictures Animation and the Kevin Love Fund’s “The Hero Within” initiative. NBA star Kevin Love founded the organization after he revealed his own mental health challenges to the press and is designed to provide tools for both mental and physical health. It’s goal is to break the stigma around mental health so that those struggling may get the support they need.

If you are struggling with your own mental health and need to seek help please reach out to someone you feel comfortable doing so and you may also visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) website or call 1-800-950-NAMI(6264).
