This is a strange sentence to write but here it is: A Disney Pixar film may actually be the true underdog hit of the summer? Elemental, the animated children’s romantic comedy film about anthropomorphic primal natural elements (fire, water, wind, earth) was originally written off as a flop after an underwhelming opening weekend. But never underestimate the number of hours parents need to fill in a summer without school, and Elemental has continued to clock along at a promising clip. Recently cresting the $400 million mark at the global box office, Elemental continues to receive positive word-of-mouth-driven sales momentum. More shocking is that the film has out-grossed both Lightyear and the virally popular Encanto, the latter both domestically and internationally.
Elemental is due to run in theaters for a bit longer and has not even hit the Disney+ circuit, where the endless rewatch-potential among viewers may drive fan interest to even higher levels. This is a great chance to dig into a few titles from a budding franchise you might have previously overlooked, but it’s never too late to jump aboard.
